4K Resolution on YouTube?

July 20th, 2010

I’m not sure if most people have seen this yet, but on July 9th, Google announced that YouTube now supports original video resolution from 360p up to 4K. Why is this worth mentioning you ask? Well, it begs the question of why?

4K is a cinematic standard resolution in digital film. The name “4K” comes refers to its horizontal resolution – 4,000 pixels. Thats a lot of pixels!  To give you an idea of how large that is… look at the chart below. 4K is large enough to show feature films in cinemas.

Digital Cinema Resolution Comparison

Obviously, Google/YouTube is looking to the future as most of us don’t even have the technical capacity to do anything with this yet, but I’d like to speculate on what the future might hold.  Two possibilities are…

  • User-controlled HDTV via the internet?
  • Digitally-distributed feature films in cinemas?

Those are just guesses, I’m sure there are other potential benefits that will emerge in the market as this evolves.

Has this ever happened to you? OK, so you are checking out a website from your iPhone, and want to watch an embedded video, but instead of video, all you see is that annoying black box.  Well no more, now thanks to YouTube, on older mobile devices you will see a thumbnail of the video from the website, and when you click on it, the video will open up in the YouTube app.    Even better, the new YouTube Mobile utilizes HTML5 video standards and will play videos directly inside the browser on devices like the iPhone and Android Motorola Droid X.

This will greatly open up your website videos to more mobile traffic.  Learn more about how to use video on your website, contact PDM today!
